Bespoke Flexible Drives
Bespoke Flexible Drives
Fairport Flexible Drive and Tool is a company who have over 100 years worth of engineering experience. This experience becomes priceless when designing bespoke drives to meet the very different needs of the customer, especially when catering for a wide range of industries such as agriculture, automotive, food processing and many more.
In this week’s blog we have decided to write about 2 great recent examples of how bespoke flexible drives are needed, what they are needed for and how we helped solve the problems presented to us.
We were contacted by Mr John Kelly of Bullington cars, a business that involves restoring classic cars. John needed a bespoke flexible drive for an 80 year old boring machine, boring machines are used to enlarge a hole that has already been drilled (or cast) by means of a single-point cutting tool, and in this case a boring tool has been used to create engine cylinders for various cars over many years. Some of the threads we had to produce have been used on cars since the turn of the century, one of which being a BS BRASS 1 X24 TPI.
The drive was re-engineered, casing, core and fittings were all successfully duplicated to meet the specifications needed to get the job done.
Our second example comes from a satisfied customer who recently enquired about repairing one of our flexible drive and tool drives that has been used to polish cast iron enamel baths for over 60 years. After having only an astonishing several repairs in its full life span the decision was made to have a new bespoke drive designed because it was deemed no longer fit for purpose.
Flexible Drive and Tool were commissioned to design a bespoke flexible drive capable of meeting the individual needs of the customer.
While working on this specific drive and tool we had to consider the following for the design:
- designed to fit the existing motor and hand tool
- The casing needed to be flexible to ensure manoeuvrability for the operator
- It needed to be durable
- It needed a swivel rotating head
The flexible drive was successfully completed last month in July and since then we have been commissioned to design two more drives to different lengths so these can be used in bathrooms of different size and scale.
